And More…

In 1945, For the first time in history, huge groups of men devoted themselves months in advance to commit suicide as a war tactic. Perhaps the most terrifying of these suicide bombers utilized airplanes laden with explosives as their most effective weapon. Today, the US is once again faced with legions of suicide bombers and, once again, suicide pilots have been their most destructive force.

The new book DANGER'S HOUR: The Story of the USS Bunker Hill and the Kamikaze Pilot Who Crippled Her by Maxwell Taylor Kennedy tells the story of the USS Bunker Hill, America's most powerful aircraft carrier in the Pacific War, which led the US advance across the Central Pacific, and how suicide tactics became the great leveler of the war. In this remarkable new book, Kennedy explains how a pair of poorly trained students flying aging aircraft was able to knock the Bunker Hill out of the war. These kamikazes destroyed 100 American planes, killed dozens of pilots, and killed or injured more than seven hundred Americans.

DANGER'S HOUR dramatically chronicles the war in the Pacific through the stories of the men aboard the USS Bunker Hill, the ship herself (a technological marvel), and her kamikaze adversaries who met in battle on May 11th, 1945. Based on extensive interviews with Japanese and American survivors, letters, diaries, and other primary sources, DANGER'S HOUR yields a complete picture of the battle on both sides while showing how crucial this battle was to victory in the Pacific, even though it was overshadowed by the almost simultaneous surrender of the Nazis in Europe.

It is vital for anyone who wishes to understand the threat of suicide bombers, and America's challenges with Al Qaeda and Islamic extremists to read this ultimately hopeful book. The compelling struggles of the heroic men aboard the USS Bunker Hill offer a unique perspective on America, who we were as a nation, and how the aircraft carrier, and the men who crewed them, changed America's foreign policy and place in the world.
